Sun Grows UNIX Marketshare in Q2 While Competition Stumbles

Sun Outshipped IBM Six to One in High-End UNIX Servers and Four to One in Midrange UNIX Servers Sun Microsystems, Inc. was the only vendor in the second quarter of calendar year 2001 to grow market share -- now at 42 percent -- while IBM, HP, Compaq and Dell declined sequentially from the first quarter 2001 to second quarter 2001. According to IDC Q2CY01 Server Tracker report released today, Sun's total server shipments -- including all operating systems -- increased 5.5 percent from Q1 to Q2, more than any other top five server vendor. In addition, Sun maintained its crown as the leader of UNIX shipments for the 17th consecutive quarter. Sun was also number one in UNIX server revenue with 35 percent market share, topping this category for 10 consecutive quarters.
